Accountability, in relation to legal and ethical compliance, is an important and highly publicized issue, especially for nonprofit organizations. The public tends to expect a higher degree of legal and ethical compliance in nonprofit organizations, given that their aim is to “do good.” Therefore, it is important that those who create or govern a nonprofit organization understand the laws and ethical guidelines involved in such an endeavor. Understanding laws and ethical guidelines and educating staff about them will help boards and organizational leadership prevent violations. However, if staff should violate laws or ethical guidelines, boards and organizational leadership must be prepared to implement corrective measures.

To prepare for this assignment:

• Review the Web sites, “Nonprofit Governance and Accountability” and “Statement of Values and Code of Ethics for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Organizations.” Consider strategies for enforcing ethical compliance related to governance and accountability.

• Review Chapter 11 in the course text, Volunteer Management. Think about how managers might enforce legal and ethical compliance among volunteers. Also, reflect on examples of legal and ethical violations volunteers might make and consider how managers might address each.
• Reflect on the nonprofit organization you are using for your Final Project. Identify at least two laws and two ethical guidelines you believe to be most important within the organization and consider why.
• Think about who might enforce legal and ethical compliance with the organization and what strategies they might use to do so.
• Consider what action(s) might be taken against a board member or volunteer who does not comply with the organization’s legal and ethical obligations.

The assignment (2-3 pages):

• Briefly describe the organization you are using for your Final Project (BOYS SCOUTS OF AMERICA).
• Explain at least two laws and two ethical guidelines you believe are most important to the organization and explain why.
• Explain who is responsible for overseeing the legal and ethical compliance in your organization, how those persons might enforce such compliance, and what actions might be taken against board members and/or volunteers who commit legal and ethical violations.
